Happy New Year, everyone!\u00a0 As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been submitting my short story, Short-Changed,<\/em> to various literary journals and magazines.\u00a0 It’s been a while since I’ve submitted my work anywhere, and I almost forgot how nerve-racking\u00a0the process\u00a0can be.\u00a0 I am not, by nature, a patient person, so\u00a0having to wait\u00a0weeks (and, in some cases, months) for an editor to get back to me is a big ask.\u00a0 I find myself checking\u00a0for\u00a0new emails obsessively, which is surely not the best way to pass the time.<\/p>\n

On some level, it’s funny that I’m so anxious to hear back from these people, because I know that their\u00a0response is likely to be negative.\u00a0 I don’t mean to suggest that I don’t think highly of my story, or that I’ve lost faith in it.\u00a0 My expectations\u00a0simply reflect the\u00a0probabilities here.\u00a0 The numbers vary depending on the publication, obviously, but even the lesser-known ones are tuning down\u00a0a hundred\u00a0pieces for every one they take.\u00a0 Plenty of good work doesn’t make the cut.\u00a0 It is what it is.<\/p>\n

But I just need one “yes,” and as long as I’ve still got submissions out there, I’ll live in hope.\u00a0 And I’ll probably keep checking my email every few minutes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
